Saving teeth comes first

Our goal is always to keep your natural teeth. But sometimes a tooth is too damaged, infected or crowded to save, and removing it is the healthiest choice. Leaving a badly broken or infected tooth in place can lead to more pain, spreading infection and damage to the teeth around it.

If Dr. Barnes recommends an extraction, he’ll show you why on your X-ray, explain any alternatives (like a root canal and crown), and talk about whether and how to replace the tooth afterward. You’ll know exactly what to expect before we begin.

Common reasons for an extraction

Note on wisdom teeth: We don’t remove wisdom teeth in our office. If your wisdom teeth or another complex extraction need surgery, Dr. Barnes will examine you, take X-rays and refer you to an oral surgeon, then see you back for your regular care.

What to expect

1. Exam and X-rays

We look at the tooth, its roots and the surrounding bone to plan the safest approach.

2. Comfort

The area is thoroughly numbed. Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) is available if you're nervous.

3. Removal

The tooth is gently loosened and removed. You'll feel pressure, but you shouldn't feel sharp pain. Tell us if you do.

4. Clot and gauze

You'll bite on gauze to help a blood clot form, which protects the socket while it heals.

5. Aftercare instructions

We'll send you home with written instructions and our phone number.

H3: Healing tips

– Avoid straws, smoking, spitting forcefully and strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours.

– Use an ice pack on your cheek for swelling during the first day.

– After 24 hours, rinse gently with warm salt water.

– Eat soft foods and chew on the other side.

– Call us if pain gets worse after a few days, or if bleeding or swelling won’t settle.

Tooth extraction FAQs

The area is fully numbed, so most patients feel pressure rather than pain. Soreness for a few days afterward is normal and usually managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

It happens when the blood clot is dislodged too early, exposing the bone. Following the aftercare instructions, especially avoiding straws and smoking, lowers the risk. Call us if pain worsens after two or three days.

Usually, yes. Gaps can let teeth shift. Options include an implant, a bridge or a denture.

No. Dr. Barnes will check your wisdom teeth at your exam. If they need to come out, we’ll refer you to an oral surgeon.

Most people feel better within a few days. The gum closes over in a few weeks, and the bone continues to heal for months.

Yes. Numbing doesn’t affect your ability to drive, and laughing gas wears off quickly after the mask comes off, so you can drive yourself home.
