In-office whitening can typically be finished in under an hour, or whiten gradually with custom trays.

Why teeth lose their brightness

Teeth darken for two main reasons. Surface stains build up from coffee, tea, red wine, soda and tobacco. Deeper discoloration happens as enamel thins with age and the darker layer underneath shows through. Brushing and cleanings remove some surface stain, but they can’t change the color inside the tooth.

Professional whitening uses a hydrogen peroxide gel that’s stronger and better controlled than store-bought kits, applied in a way that protects your gums. Once activated, it reaches stains inside the tooth, not just on the surface. We use Opalescence and KöR whitening products. Before whitening, Dr. Barnes checks for cavities, gum problems or worn enamel that could cause sensitivity, and tells you honestly how much change to expect.

Whitening may be a good fit if:

Whitening won’t change the color of crowns, veneers or fillings, and some deep stains (for example from certain medications or injury) respond less. For those, veneers may be an option.

How professional whitening works

1. Check-up first

We make sure your teeth and gums are healthy and record your starting shade.

2. Choose your option

In-office whitening, which can typically be finished in under an hour, or custom take-home trays made from a digital scan of your teeth for gradual whitening at home. Some patients use both.

3. Protect and apply

Your gums are protected and the whitening gel is applied to your teeth.

4. Review results

We compare your new shade and talk about keeping it.

Your whitening visit, step by step

  1. Exam and cleaning first. We check for cavities, gum problems or worn enamel, because whitening works best on healthy teeth.
  2. Record your starting shade. So you can see the change.
  3. Protect your gums. A barrier keeps the gel on your teeth.
  4. Whiten. Professional gel is applied in the office, or we scan your teeth for custom trays.
  5. Compare and plan. We check your new shade and talk about keeping it.

Due for a cleaning? New patients can start with the $99 New Patient Special: $99 covers exam, X-rays, and prophy (regular cleaning) when there is no periodontal disease. If periodontal disease is present, it’s $69 for the exam and X-rays, and the patient pays separately for the necessary cleaning.

After whitening: keeping your results

  • For the first day or two, go easy on coffee, tea, red wine, soda and tobacco, since stains can settle in faster right after whitening.
  • Some temporary sensitivity is common and usually fades within a few days. A desensitizing toothpaste can help. Call us if it doesn’t.
  • Follow the wear-time directions for your take-home trays. More isn’t better.
  • Keep your regular cleanings to remove new surface stain.
  • Use your trays for occasional touch-ups as directed.

In-office, take-home trays or both: comparing whitening options

  • In-office whitening: can typically be finished in under an hour. A good fit before a wedding, reunion or photos.
  • Custom take-home trays: made from a digital scan of your teeth for gradual whitening at home. Handy for touch-ups later.
  • Both: some patients start in the office and keep their results with trays.
  • Store kits: one-size strips and trays with weaker gel, no exam first and no gum protection, so results are often less even.

Whitening only changes natural teeth. If you also want to change shape, chips or gaps, compare veneers or see all our cosmetic dentistry options.

Teeth whitening cost & payment options

Whitening is cosmetic, so insurance usually doesn’t cover it. Your fee depends on whether you choose in-office, take-home or both, and we’ll tell you before you start. We accept cash, credit cards, CareCredit, Cherry payment plans and some in-house finance options.
