sleep apnea

Since sleep apnea is often mistaken for just snoring, many patients believe that that they don’t need to seek out treatment for the problem. However, this can be a serious mistake. It is associated with a number of dangerous conditions, some of which can be life-threatening. Studies have linked sleep apnea with just some of the following problems:

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart problems
  • Diabetes
  • Metabolic issues
  • Liver damage

Fortunately, it can often be treated with the use of a custom-made oral appliance. These devices adjust the position of the jaw to promote an open airway.

The first step when addressing a potential case is to make sure that the condition is actually sleep apnea and not just regular snoring. There are many signs to look for when determining if a patient is suffering from apnea. Some of these signs include

  • Loud, frequent snoring
  • Abruptly awakening at night
  • Dry mouth and sore throats
  • Frequent headaches
  • Poor sleeping patterns
  • Tiredness while awake
  • Poor focus and concentration
  • Irritability and mood swings

Patients who are demonstrating all or most of these signs are usually determined to be suffering from sleep apnea.
