Teeth Extractions

The first step of a teeth extraction is to take digital X-rays of the structure and the area that surrounds it. This is done so that we can properly determine the best way to remove the tooth. Once we have a plan in place, we can proceed with the extraction. We typically start by providing any necessary sedation for the patient. This will help ensure that they are kept as comfortable as possible during the process. Our practice is prepared to offer local anesthesia, oral sedation and laughing gas.
The actual process of teeth extraction is usually very quick. Most patients report that they feel pressure, but no pain during the actual extraction. From there, we will immediately get work with controlling any bleeding. The patient will need to bite down on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes to form a blood clot at the extraction site.
In the days following the procedure, the patient should take steps to avoid irritating or disturbing the blood clot. We ask that patients avoid using a straw, consuming drugs and alcohol, participating in intense exercise and smoking for at least 24 hours after a tooth extraction.
Patients can use an ice pack on the outer cheek near the extraction site. This will help to reduce any swelling that may follow. Once the swelling has subsided, a warm compress can be applied to the area to promote comfort. We also recommend performing warm salt water rinses to help keep the area clean, but this should only be done after at least 24 hours have elapsed.

Also referred to as the third molars, a person’s wisdom teeth will typically begin to emerge when they are in their late teens or early twenties. These teeth grow in the back of the mouth, often at a slanted angle. Because of the angle at which they grow and the general lack of space available for them in the mouth, most people have these teeth removed before they cause any serious problems.
