The chewing surfaces of molars have deep pits and grooves. Food and bacteria settle into them, and toothbrush bristles often can’t reach all the way in. That’s why so many cavities start on the tops of back teeth, especially in children and teens.
A sealant is a thin, tooth-colored or clear coating painted into those grooves. Once it hardens, it smooths the surface and blocks food and bacteria from getting trapped, making the tooth easier to keep clean. Sealants work alongside brushing, flossing, fluoride and regular checkups; they don’t replace them. Think of them as a raincoat for the parts of the tooth a toothbrush struggles to reach.
