If you’ve been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea or struggle with CPAP, a custom oral appliance may be an option worth discussing.
Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the soft tissues in the throat relax during sleep and block the airway, causing breathing to pause again and again through the night. Loud snoring is a common sign, but not everyone who snores has sleep apnea. Untreated sleep apnea has been linked with high blood pressure, heart problems and daytime sleepiness that can affect work and driving.
Sleep apnea must be diagnosed by a physician, usually with a sleep study. For many people with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, or those who can’t tolerate CPAP, a custom-made oral appliance is a recognized treatment option. Dr. Jon Barnes can evaluate your teeth and jaw, make a custom oral appliance that adjusts the position of your jaw to help keep the airway open, and work with your physician on your care.
If you have these symptoms but haven’t been tested, ask your physician about a sleep study.
A sleep study confirms the type and severity of sleep apnea.
Dr. Barnes checks your teeth, gums and jaw joints to make sure an appliance is suitable.
A digital scan of your teeth is used to make a custom device that gently holds your lower jaw slightly forward during sleep to help keep the airway open.
We fit the appliance and adjust it over follow-up visits for comfort and effect.
